Small Efforts
I was sitting at home the other night when it was decided that a trip to the store was needed for dinner. It was cold and rainy and even though the trip to the market is a small one, the idea of going out in the driving rain wasn’t very appealing. I will be honest the thought of jumping in the car and cruising downtown crossed my mind for more than a second. I then felt the guilt seep in and realized how wasteful that would be. I then jumped on my bike and was back within 15 minutes happy I had made the choice to leave the car in the garage.
Now this was no big sacrifice, I don’t have a commute to work as many of you do and only mention this because it is all of these small trips to areas around our homes that make up a large part of the problem. Clif launched their 2 mile challenge at Interbike and if you haven’t checked it out go to their website, there is some great info regarding the amount of pollution that is generated from these short trips. Now I know that this is something that many of you are already doing, but start to think about the number of folks out there who aren’t commuting by bike. I am sure if you stop to think there is someone you know that enjoys biking for recreation but has never given it serious thought for short distance commuting. I have been inspired by what Clif is doing with their 2 mile challenge and will be attempting to find someone I know to make a commitment to change.
Civia will be looking at how we can help promote commuting both for short trips and for those who have decided to use bikes for longer commutes as well. If you have ideas on cool things that we could be doing as a company to bring awareness to or promote commuting by bike send me your ideas at pj@civiacycles.com I would love to read them. I am in Portland for the USGP Cross Cup; hope to see some of you there!PJ
